Google Wave to Reinvent Email?

Earlier this year, Google announced a new product they are working on - Google Wave. This morning, reports are in that Wave is inviting 100,000 users on September 30, 2009.

Google Wave is a new, internet based communications application that seems to combine traditional email with instant messaging, blogs, photo (and document) sharing, and resembles a format that looks like a cross between gmail and facebook. Instead of sending emails, users can contribute to "waves", which can be shared amongst any number of participants.

Here are some of the features of Google Wave that got my attention:

  • Live mode: You will be able to see what someone else is typing, character-by-character - just like instant chat.
  • Open source: Developers will have access to the code, allowing them to build applications for the program
  • Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file from your hard drive and drop it inside a Google Wave. How simple does that sound?
  • Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said - particularly useful for users that might enter a wave mid-session.
  • Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. So, you can correct information or add your own commentary within a developing conversation.
  • Blogs: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website
  • Advanced spell-check - Google Wave will automatically correct your spelling as you type and can even translate on-the-fly.
So will Google Wave spell the end for traditional email? Certainly not yet, but it's easy to see how this - or future innovative products like this could take communication over the internet down a whole new set of exciting paths. Google Wave is due for general release before the years end.
